    Kristin Russum: As the Director of Organizational Development at TriNet, Kristin supports small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to accelerate through change and achieve their strategic objectives. With over 15 years of experience in human resources and organizational development, Kristin has a proven track record of delivering data-driven solutions that enhance performance, engagement, and retention of talent across diverse industries and geographies.

    Her core competencies include strategic workforce planning, talent management, building engagement, succession planning, training and development, employee relations, benefits design, policy development, and financial management.     Leadership Transitions explores the journey an organization takes from the point that a change is announced until the beginning of new leadership. It provides information, opportunities for reflection, and tools related to the key chapters of a leadership transition:

    You will notice that people are at the center of the leadership transition cycle. You will see that this is not a linear process that ends once an executive is hired. Every transition starts the cycle again with a reminder to be ready… to invest in the capacity of the organization to lead through a future transition. 

     Who should take this course:  

    This resource was designed for the people leading organizations (aka board members) experiencing transition, not necessarily the leaders transitioning in or out or the staff members being impacted by transition. Our focus is on the needs and realities of small and medium-sized organizations, though larger organizations may find the resources helpful too. We seek to demystify the process and lead you to other resources that fill in any gaps. Through it all, we are cheering you on!

    The Finance & Loan Navigator program is available to any individual who feels they need to have a better understanding of both organizational nonprofit finances and the loan preparedness process. The program is set up as three modules: Financial Essentials, Financial Strategy and Loan Navigator. You will receive a Financial Navigator Guide and a Loan Navigator Guide to follow along with.     Course Description:

    The Finance & Loan Navigator program is available to any individual who feels they need to have a better understanding of both organizational nonprofit finances and the loan preparedness process. 

    The program is set up as three modules: Financial Essentials, Financial Strategy and Loan Navigator.  You will receive a Financial Navigator Guide and a Loan Navigator Guide to follow along with. This program helps break down the information so you can digest it and allows you to stop and start as needed.   

    Each module contains examples to follow along with, discussion guides that help you to apply the information and test your knowledge and provides suggestions for group discussions with colleagues. In addition to the guide, there are three short learning webinars paired with each module that are each 10-15 minutes in length. 

    To pass each module, you must view at least 90% of each module video and score at least 80% correct in the accompanying quizzes.

    There are many reasons why this program is beneficial for your nonprofit organization and its board members, but the following are some of the most common:

    • To increase confidence in understanding nonprofit financials 

    • To understand how debt can be beneficial 

    • To strengthen your organization’s financial health 

    • To expand conversations related to loan options as a tool to grow or expand programs  

    • To find solutions for financial opportunities or challenges 

    • To understand when an organization is or isn’t prepared/ready to obtain a loan/incur debt 

    • To understand cash-flow forecasting

    The U.S. Department of Labor issued its Final Rule on April 23, 2024, increasing the salary minimum for Executive, Administrative, Professional, and Highly Compensated Employees to be exempt from overtime under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act .

    The U.S. Department of Labor issued its Final Rule on April 23, 2024, increasing the salary minimum for Executive, Administrative, Professional, and Highly Compensated Employees to be exempt from overtime under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The deadline to audit and potentially raise the pay of salaried FLSA exempt positions is July 1, 2024. Nonprofits, which are critically dependent upon grants and the generosity of donors, will be most affected by these new salary thresholds. 

    Longtime labor and employment attorney Denise Blommel will explain the new Rule and strategies for compliance. Additionally, Denise will talk about relatively unknown, but important, rules about the payment of overtime that go beyond simply “time and one-half.” She will also address common myths about the payment of salaries.

    imageDENISE M. BLOMMEL is an attorney in Scottsdale, Arizona.  She is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of Arizona and Nevada.  Her practice centers on the employer-employee relationship.

    Denise is a former Field Attorney with the National Labor Relations Board and a former Assistant Chief Counsel of the Industrial Commission of Arizona.  She represents employers and employees in employment and labor matters.

    Denise belongs to the State Bar of Arizona, State Bar of Nevada, the American Bar Association, the Scottsdale Bar Association, and the Arizona Employment Lawyers Association.  She is President-Elect of the State Bar of Arizona’s Senior Lawyers Division.

    Denise was awarded the State Bar of Arizona’s Member of the Year for 1998-1999.  She was also awarded the State Bar Employment & Labor Law Section Member of the Year in 2014.  Denise is one of the authors of the State Bar’s Arizona Employment Law Handbook and a co-author of articles in the January 2022, January 2021, and December 2013 State Bar’s Arizona Attorney about the State Board of Education’s expanded jurisdiction, COVID-19 in the Workplace, and the Affordable Care Act; and two articles in the April 1994 and April 1998 Arizona Attorney about Workers' Compensation, the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family Medical Leave Act.  Denise served as Chair of the Employment & Labor Law and Co-Chair of the Workers’ Compensation Law Sections of the State Bar of Arizona. 

    Denise holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Economics, with Highest Distinction (Summa Cum Laude), Honors, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, from the University of Arizona.  She serves on the Advisory Board to the Honors College at the University of Arizona.  Her law degree is from Arizona State University.  Denise and her Moot Court teammates placed second in the nation in the National Moot Court competition – team, brief, and speaker.

    Denise is a frequent presenter for government, business, educational and community groups.  She taught Human Resources Law for the ASU Master of Legal Studies Program in 2014 and 2015 and was active with the former ASU Law Group. 

    Denise is a mediator with the U.S. Postal Service.  She and her husband, Don Doerres, are regular presenters of “Soft Skills for a Hard World,” a seminar to improve workplace communication and resolve conflict.  Denise and Don belong to the University of Iowa Alumni Association and Denise is a life member of both the ASU and U of A Alumni Associations.

    Denise served on the Board of Directors for 20 years for Girl Scouts – Arizona Cactus-Pine Council.  The Girl Scouts awarded Denise the Thanks Badge in 2000; the Thanks Badge II in 2005, and the Impact Award in 2020, their highest volunteer honors.  She currently serves as Chair of the Council’s Personnel Committee.  Denise and Don live in Scottsdale and are active at St. Patrick Catholic Community.
